Just a few weeks ago, the two of us were sitting in the basement of our old house, packing boxes for a move to another town. We were sifting through a stack of books, when both of us gasped at the same time at the sight of one of the covers. The book was not much longer than a hundred or so pages, but a flood of memories overcame us as we flipped through the pages, one over the other’s shoulder, amazed at the realization that we remembered nearly every word. The discussion immediately turned to dozens of other books from our childhood, from American Girl guides to Helen Keller biographies. It was that moment that we realized how much books have impacted us, and how much we have to say about them! That’s why we decided to start a book club, right here on our channel, and we want everyone watching to join.
The first book that we read is called One and the Same: My Life as an Identical Twin and What I’ve Learned About Everyone’s Struggle to Be Singular, by Abigail Pogrebin. The book is a comprehensive account of Abigail’s life with her twin, Robin, mixed in with stories of that of dozens of others. We were drawn to it, of course, out of curiousity of reading another twin’s account of the relationship we know so well. However, One and the Same has appeal for anyone looking for sometimes heartbreakingly honest, yet inspiring, stories of individuals who live in a world where they are all too often seen as doubles.
If you have any suggestions for books you’d like us to read, please feel free to let us know!
